nHealth adopted a consumer-driven health plan in early 2008, and we reduced our premium by 45 percent, allowing us to invest more than $80,000 in our employees’ HSAs. After that investment, our net savings was still 20 percent. When we renewed our coverage this year, we had a zero percent increase. We’ve also seen an increased level of employee engagement in managing their health care. Some have lost weight, one has quit smoking – all of them are making the connection between their behavior and health-care costs.

How have consumer-driven plans have helped other companies?

After years of following the herd and paying the “Big Boys” in the health insurance industry our monthly premiums, we finally found an alternative that makes sense. During the last 8 years we saw our premiums jump 5%, then 8%, then 18% without any increase in coverage.

nHealth is a totally different way of thinking about health insurance. Our premiums were cut in half for our family of 3, $1138 dropped to $570. The $568 difference is no longer padding the pockets of a large health insurance company; instead, we put that money into our own Health Savings Account. I love it!

I wanted to share with you a big thank you for 2 outstanding, dedicated and caring people - Lori Johnson and Tammy in Utilization Review. At 4:45 pm on Friday I received a panic call from the spouse of a new nhealth member. The issue was not having her cancer medication over the weekend. Long story short - both of these ladies were still on the phones at 6:30 Friday evening helping me and trying to correct this situation. They were so wonderful, patient and cared about what would happen if this member did not receive her medication. I shared with the spouse that he should be thankful that he wasn’t with Anthem, Southern Health or any of the other carriers because at 5:00 on Friday no one would have been there to help.

You have super people working for nhealth, working to help us in the field, but most especially caring about brokers and members alike. You certainly can’t say that about a lot of companies these days. Lori has always been there for us and sometimes we don’t take the time to say thanks for all that she does. We couldn’t do our jobs without people like her. I wish you would pass this email to Tammy and her manager. She needs to know how much we appreciate what she did.
